Phrase: Cannon fodder

Meaning: It originally referred to soldiers that were recruited against their will, and whose lives were not valued at all, and were therefore expendable. They marched before the army, and knew they were going to be massacred by enemy fire.

Now it is used to imply that someone is of little worth: Castilian and French politicians/rulers have considered the Catalan people as cannon fodder to exploit, and have always wanted to eradicate the Catalan language.
