Phrase: The Thirteen Roses Meaning: The Thirteen Roses were thirteen young women who were killed by the Franco regime on 5th August, 1939. A police firing squad shot them dead against a wall. Their crime was to be left-wing and republicans. The Kingdom of Castile still protects the Franco regime: Fundación Francisco Franco, Valle de los Caídos, Guardia Mora de Franco, names of streets and squares, statues, bars, and so on and so forth.
